Tell about your foray into tech world?
  • I began my career as an Undergraduate student as an intern at Intel Corporation. It was exciting to come to Silicon Valley, the heart of much tech invention and becoming part of a major leading tech company. I learned a lot including what I didnt like to do. I strongly encourage students to look for any opportunity to work/participate in the tech industry before they graduate.
  • I subsequently worked at HP and Hughes Research Labs. I learned working at a research lab how much I liked the independence and autonomy of doing research
  • I worked full time at IBM corporation who also sponsored me for my PhD. I was a Vision specialist and worked with research and an International team on unique vision based systems. I enjoyed working on an international team but, working across time zones is a challenge.
  • I most recently while on sabbatical served at Google as a Faculty in Residence

What is the most exciting thing about Web Systems today?
  • ONE. For me personally, it is how the Web connects us and provides opportunities to accomplish tasks we never could before. Think about how the Web/Cloud is used for distributed computing --how you can train a ML system to help drive a car autonomously. With out these resources it is not possible. Think about the distribution of information and how it has changed the world --shopping, loss of annonymity, immediacy of information & entertainment, working with people virtually across the world. That's amazing.
  • TWO. It is a field where computer scientists are always inventing and re-inventing ideas and technology to better improve the performance and availbility of web information and resources. That's exciting as a computer SCIENTIST but, it makes it challenging too --what do you learn when there are so many options? Well, I am here to help direct you but, let me say--learning some aspect of riding a particular bike will help you with many if not all bikes. That is true to some degree about Web technologies. We CAN'T learn it all --but, I will try to offer you a sampling of the more popular platforms. We also, unfortunately in one semester can't go as deep as we need to become moderately adept. However, it is a good start.

What advice do you give to students interested in web systems?
  • Get plugged into the community in silicon valley. One great way to do that is to join meetups related to Web Systems (see meetup.com) ---they offer free meetings (usually) and is a great way to network.
  • Another way is through hackathons and student groups like ACM on campus --they can have events related to Web.
  • Try to get an internship at a company related to web --if that is where you want to go.
