Most Common Image Formats


 

  • GIF = Graphical Interchange Format

    • 256 colors only
    • modest compression
    • good for icons, buttons, bullets, small illustrations, graphical lines, charts, tables, thumbnails.


  • PNG = extension of GIF to full color, modesl compression when compared to JPEG

  • JPEG = Joint Photographic Experts Group

    • good compression, but, may take longer to uncompress and view, lossy.
    • full color (24 bit)
    • good for photographic-quality images, large images


  • HEIC = High Efficiency Image Format (HEIF) standard

    • is used by Apple to store photos. HEIC files use modern compression methods to create smaller files while maintaining image quality compared to other formats like JPEG.
