SPECIAL NOTE FOR MAC USERS: if you are a Mac user, you will need to download an alternative to SSH (this is not available on Macs). One I have found some people using is CyberDuck but, there are many more. Remember these are simple tools that let you transfer files (using SFTP protocol) from your local machine to a remote machine like your Puzzle.sci web server account. This is an import concept to tackle for web developers. You are free to use any tool you like. PLEASE --share with us via emailing the group if your are a Mac user what you like to use or what you found...or your own tips on cyberduck. (http://cyberduck.ch/ is cyberduck website)

Virtual Meeting

What is it?

  • Video/Audio Conferencing AND Desktop sharing
    • to use audio must have microphone and speakers
    • to send video must have a camera (can recieve video without this).

ALL OTHER FEATURES YOU CAN DO WITH groups of people.

  • Text Chat
  • Browse websites
  • Remote Desktop Sharing: where you can give control of your desktop to other(s) in call/meeting.

HOW?

  • Use the feature on blackboard
    1. Arrange with Instructor time to do the virtual meeting
    2. Log on to bb.csueastbay.edu a few mintues prior to meeting
    3. Go to our class's blackboard class page
    4. Go to Email and More (or Communications) link

    5. Go to Eluminate Live link (this is the Virtual Meeting Tool)

Web Conferencing alternative

Virtual Computer Lab Machine --

Your class will have a virtual computer lab (VCL) machine setup for our class. See http://www20.csueastbay.edu/its/cls/virtual-labs/vcl-faqs.html for details and a quick start guide.

Concept

  • anywhere you have internet and web browser access you can log itno the VCL and it will bring up a "virtual computer/machine" that has some of the software we are using
  • Benefit - it has a small number of Adobe CS5 licenses for you to use
  • Negative - can be a slower and YOUR MUST make sure YOU STORE ON your local machine your files (they will disappear otherwise after the session). Also, if the licenes are limited as in Adobe to X licenses and you are the X+1th person you will have to wait until someone is off. However, it is time limited up to 4 hours in 1 hour renewal intervals (allowing only 20 minutes idle time --and will log you off).
  • RECOMMENDATIONS
    • save work frequently
    • save work on YOUR local machine drives
    • AND save work ALSO to a USB stick or upload or email work to yourself
