Most Common Image Formats

  • GIF = Graphical Interchange Format
    • 256 colors only
    • modest compression
    • good for icons, buttons, bullets, small illustrations, graphical lines, charts, tables, thumbnails.

  • JPEG = Joint Photographic Experts Group
    • good compression, but, may take longer to uncompress and view, lossy.
    • full color (24 bit)
    • good for photographic-quality images, large images

  • PNG
    • extension of GIF to full color (24 bit)
    • compression not as good as JPEG
    • hence use for small images, icons, etc.
